Description
Great Educators of the East and the West by B.D. Bhatia and Kamala Bhatia, with an introduction by Rajni Kumar, is a compact and meaningful collection of biographical sketches and educational reflections on major thinkers whose ideas have shaped the philosophy and practice of education across cultures. The book presents educators, philosophers, reformers, and social thinkers from both Eastern and Western traditions, showing how their visions contributed to broader debates on learning, character, citizenship, freedom, morality, social change, and human development.
The volume includes discussions on figures such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Rousseau, Froebel, Karl Marx, Swami Dayanand Saraswati, Swami Vivekananda, Annie Besant, Dr. Muhammad Iqbal, Rabindranath Tagore, Mahatma Gandhi, Shri Aurobindo Ghose, Maria Montessori, John Dewey, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Dr. A.N. Whitehead, Dr. Marshall McLuhan, and J. Krishnamurti. By bringing these personalities together, the book encourages readers to understand education not merely as schooling, but as a transformative process connected with society, values, equality, justice, creativity, and self-realisation.
This edition is especially useful for students of education, philosophy of education, teacher training, educational history, and comparative educational thought. Its concise chapters make it suitable for quick reference, examination preparation, classroom discussion, and independent reading. Great Educators of the East and the West is a helpful companion for readers who want to understand how influential thinkers from different periods and cultures imagined the purpose of education and the role of teachers in shaping humane, thoughtful, and responsible individuals.
